William Ortman graduated from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, concentrating in glassblowing. His artistic vision centers on creating aesthetic forms that showcase the interplay of rich colors and textures.

Drawn to glass for its unique ability to transform light and color, Ortman is fascinated by the medium’s depth, tonal variation, and luminosity. Unlike other sculptural materials, glass offers the ability to layer and manipulate color in ways that produce a distinct three-dimensional vibrancy.

Collaboration is an important aspect of Ortman’s process. Having studied with accomplished glass artists, he continues to refine his skills and explore the medium’s endless possibilities. His recent work incorporates traditional Italian techniques such as incalmo, cane working, and intricate murrine, through which he blends technical precision with organic forms inspired by nature and Asian art.

What began as a practice in creating simple vessels has evolved into a body of work defined by dynamic forms and complex surface treatments. From vividly patterned vases to sculptural pieces inspired by seashells and natural symmetry, Ortman’s creations often balance the structural geometry of cane and murrine with the fluidity of natural textures. Sandblasting serves as a final step to reveal the underlying hues and subtle nuances of each piece.

Each work demands intense focus and craftsmanship, resulting in one-of-a-kind creations that reflect his ongoing artistic evolution. For Ortman, glassblowing is more than a medium, it is a lifelong pursuit of beauty, balance, and innovation.
